DURHAM — Passion for public education is the main reason state Sen. Iris Estabrook of Durham became the seventh state senator to endorse Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Hillary Clinton.

Clinton "has articulated in more detail her commitment to public education," Estabrook said Tuesday in a conference call with New Hampshire reporters. In particular, Estabrook, a former elementary school teacher and chairwoman of the Education and Health and Human Services senate committees, cited Clinton's focus on making higher education more affordable and a $10 billion investment in pre-school through high school programs to revitalize public education.

"I am convinced Sen. Clinton is the best prepared to lead us not only from day one but throughout" her presidency, Estabrook said. She told reporters that she had taken her time to decide on an endorsement.

The campaign said Estabrook, who is serving her third term in the Senate, will serve as a co-chair of Educators for Hillary and will play an active role in the campaign reaching out to the education community and developing policy.

Estabrook has joined Maggie Hassan of Exeter as Seacoast region senators who have endorsed Clinton and plan to work hard for the campaign.

Also on Tuesday, Clinton announced her American Retirement Accounts Plan during a speech in Iowa. The proposal, which the campaign said would help bolster the middle class, offered tax cuts of up to $1,000 a year to encourage millions of working-age families to open personal 401(k) retirement accounts. The program would be paid for through higher estate taxes.

Clinton will be in New Hampshire on Wednesday and Thursday, with stops in Merrimack, Derry, Plymouth and Canterbury to talk about jobs for the future, her higher education policies and to take part in a barn party.
